Spruce up old paneling?

I like the paneling in our '56 Eichler, but it is rather dull; my wife hates it and wants to paint over it. My only hope for saving it is if I can find some way to treat it to make it look richer, nicer. Any suggestions?

I remember in the past that people were recommending Howards' Feed'n'Wax. You should be able to pick some up at a local hardward store (maybe even the bigger guys like HD or OSH). It doesn't add color but does provide a richer hue. If you have grubby areas around lightswitches, I've been told using the product on fine steel wool and rubbing the dirty areas provides a good result.

Best of luck.

P.S. If you haven't already, using the search on this webboard for "paneling" should turn up previous discussions.
